#88 Sunburst Square (my first design)

I decided it was time to try my hand at designing my own square.  It uses singles, doubles, front post triples, and for want of a better description, front post half triples.

The 'half triples' came to be because they were front posted from a row of singles, instead of the usual doubles.  Therefore, they needed to be a bit shorter than a regular front posted triple.  I finished each stitch in the manner of a half double.  Kind of hard to explain...does it make sense?

If anyone would like directions for this square, I'll try making them (also for the first time).

The yarns were, from the inner row out:  Vanna's Choice Magenta, Premier Dream Fiery Red, Premier Dream Red Orange, Bernat Satin Tangerine, Premier Dream Baby Yellow, and Bernat Satin Goldenrod.  I'm not 100% on the magenta, but the rest of the colors work for me.

Well, that's my first effort.  Tell me what you think....

Too busy to do  much crochet, thus this short post and my daily square.

This square is from "50 Fabulous Crochet Squares". Anyone surprised?  The yarns are Premier Yarns 'Dream' Baby Yellow and Baby Blue.  The teal yarn is mystery yarn that came to me via a bag at a garage sale.  My guess is that it is Red Heart.

Happy Happy Joy Joy

Today's photo challenge word was "Joy".  I took a drive to my favorite Seattle neighborhood, Queen Anne.  I'd live there if there were any way to afford one of those lovely old houses.

Fortunately, I can still afford to go for a walk on my favorite street, which shall remain a secret.

The cherry trees were still blooming...

But the petals are beginning to fall.  When they really get going, they can rival a snowfall!

Walking on, I am at my absolute favorite part of my favorite street.  It is lined here with real-honest-to-goodness chestnut trees;  the kind you roast on your open fire.  When I began coming here, there were twice as many of these stately trees, but one by one, the city decides one is diseased and it gets taken down.  So sad.  Look at the cars parked down the street...yes, the trees are really that big.

Exiting the avenue of trees, you come upon this sweet little wedge of ground with it's incredible view and historical marker.

Made a pit stop at my favorite bagel bakery.  Love their poppy seed bagels, but they have quit making egg bagels, booo!  They tried to sell me on the replacement, potato bagels (??).  Whaaaah?  All floury on the outside they are an invitation to a toaster fire, if you ask me.  I passed on them today, because I don't want flour in my toaster, but the next time I buy one to eat on the spot I'll try it out.

Discovered that my beloved Teacup and it's incredible teas is no more.  I am relieved to discover that they will continue to maintain their mail order business.  Whew, still have a place to buy Phoenix Dragon Pearl, the best tea EVER.

85, 86, and a Rainy Day

I'm going to have to start using a tape recorder while I'm driving around.  I think of so many good things for the blog, but by the time I'm sitting here in front of the computer, they have vanished.

Here are 85 and 86!  Both are from 50 Fabulous Crochet Squares.  This has become my favorite Granny Square resource.  The squares aren't all spiderwebby, having substance and all will work when sewed into a blanket.

#86 was entitled Autumn Leaves.  I changed the dark brown to this variegated yarn, and I think it works.

All of these colors do tend to show up in fall leaves, even the blue.  A case in point is the next picture, which I took with my phone this past fall. I see all of those colors in this beautiful puddle full of leaves.

So prosaic, so beautiful!

Only one grannie on this very busy day.  I see #100 on the horizon, though, so I think I will definitely step up production so that I can attain that milestone.  I find it really does help to have a goal.

Square #83, which started out as a pattern in 50 Fabulous Crochet Squares.    If I had continued to completion of the pattern, it would have been 12" square, really, too big for my use.  I stopped three rows short, and think it's perfectly well balance.  I like it.

After I took my daughter to her job, I spent some time wandering about in Seattle, looking for a good, new-to-me vantage point .  This is the view from the Ursula Judkins Viewpoint in the Magnolia area.  We are looking at downtown Seattle across one of the Elliott Bay shipping areas, and is also the starting point for many of the cruise ships.   The weather today was classic Seattle:  cloudy with sunbreaks, breezy, and somewhat chilly.  It was also just a stunning day that I am the better for being out and experiencing it.  The fact that I very nearly ran out of gas only added interest!

Terrific Tuesday, Pattern and 80, 81 and 82

Antelope Canyon, AZ

Because this Tuesday isn't all that terrific to me, and because I have been focusing too much on all the negative this week, I'm posting this photo of Antelope Canyon on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona.  It's one of the most awe inspiring, peaceful places I have ever been lucky enough to be.

Later that day, we experienced the sunset glowing against the eroded rock formations outside Page, AZ.  Deep breath...and relax.  It's ok.

Almost all front posting, this was a completely new pattern for me.  Find it in 50 Fabulous Crochet Squares, by Jean Leinhauser & Rita Weiss.

I really enjoyed working this square, and love the way it looks.

This is a new pattern, both for me and in fact.  It is by Aurora Suominen and is available for free HERE.  I love the flower!  It is very different, using back posting to achieve the 3-d effect.  While this picture could be better due to the influence of my assistant, it's very cool.

Since I started my 365 squares in a year thing in mid February, I just want to say...I'm catching up!

My basket weave blanket is coming along.  At two rows a day, it's going to take a while, but that's ok...summer is just around the corner here so I have plenty of time.
